Project Scope Management (A high-level snapshot)
Define all the work required and only the work required to complete the project is the goal of Project Scope Management Knowledge Area. This is the 2nd Project Management Knowledge area after Project Integration and consists of highly interactive processes. The Product Scope and Project Scope is also defined here.
Project Scope Management Knowledge Area
There are six major elements in the process of scope management to achieve and outline the project’s parameters. These are:
Plan Scope Management
- It provides guidance and direction on how scope will be managed throughout the project
- The process of creating a scope management plan that documents how the project and product scope will be defined, validated, and controlled
- Performed once or at predefined points in the project
Collect Requirements
- It provides the basis for defining the product scope and project scope
- The process of determining, documenting, and managing stakeholderneeds and requirements to meet objectives
- Performed once or at predefined points in the project
Define Scope
- It describes the product, service, or result boundaries and acceptance criteria
- The process of developing a detailed description of the project and product
- The Define Scope process can be highly iterative
- It provides the vision of Project Results
Create WBS
- It provides a framework of what has to be delivered
- A process of subdividing project deliverables and project work into smaller, more manageable components
- Performed once or at predefined points in the project
Validate Scope
- Brings objectivity to the acceptance process and increases the probability of final product, service, or result acceptance by validating each deliverable
- The process of formalizing acceptance of the completed project deliverables
- Performed periodically throughout the project as needed
Control Scope
- The scope baseline is maintained throughout the project
- The process of monitoring the status of the project and product scope and managing changes to the scope baseline
- Performed throughout the project
